AFTER HURRICANE CHARLEY HIT FLORIDA IN 2004

ROSE PETALS SHOSHONE WIND-WALKER (AKA SHONEY)

SHONEY LIVES IN PORT CHARLOTTE, FLORIDA AND IS A HURRICANE CHARLEY SURVIVOR!

When we heard on the news and saw in the Kansas City Star that Port Charlotte had been hit hard by Hurricane Charley we were very worried. We tried calling and emailing but, of course, there was no phone service. After about 5 days we were able to reach by phone a close relative that lives here in Missouri and were told that they rode out the storm at home. They were all doing just fine. So we were finally able to breathe a sigh of relief.

This is an email received from Shoney's human mom after service was finally restored:

KAREN

YOU WOULD HAVE BEEN VERY PROUD OF SHONEY DURING HURRICANE CHARLEY. WHEN THE 145 MILE WINDS HIT OUR HOUSE SHE SAT AT OUR FEET IN THE HALLWAY AND NEVER FLINCHED EVEN WHEN THINGS BEGAN TO HIT THE HOUSE. ZACK WAS BRAVE ALSO BUT HE LAID IN THE DOORWAY TO THE SPARE BEDROOM. WE ARE VERY LUCKY TO BE ALIVE BY THE TIME IT CHANGED COURSE IT WAS TOO LATE TO GET OUT. SOME PEOPLE SAID THEIR CATS WERE VERY NERVOUS AND JUMPY AND HIDING BUT NOT THESE TWO BRAVE LITTLE SOULS. I GUESS THEY THOUGHT "IF OUR HUMANS CAN TAKE IT, SO CAN WE." WILL SEND PICTURES ASAP.

When Hurricane Ivan was scheduled to hit an email was received from Shoney herself.

Hi Karen !!!!!!!

The people I live and share a home with, have been extremely busy. Today I laid on the top of my cat tower (PICTURED BELOW) and watched Bill and his son, as they were boarding the windows and doors in preparation for the arrival of Ivan. They have laid in supplies (PICTURED ABOVE), cat litter, crunchy snacks that help keep my teeth clean, and extra Iams cat food; so that if the stores can't reopen, like after Charley, I will have plenty to eat. They have plenty of bottled water for me to drink. They even have a large generator, to power the fans to help keep me cool. Later while Kaye was folding the laundry, I laid on top of the clean clothes and gave her instructions how to properly fold the clothes. We are anxiously watching Ivan, if need be we will all evacuate to safer ground. Well my paws are getting tired from typing so I will say bye for now and send you my love.
