We received word that on Monday, May 7, 2007 Samson and his owner woke up early that morning around 2 a.m., to flood waters rushing into their home in Topeka, KS.  When his  owner's feet hit the floor in knee-high raging water.  His owner rushed   to the front door to unlock it and try to open it; but the water was fast and by then waist high.  The first person (now  her hero)  to her rescue was a  female neighbor who was warning the entire building and tried   to save Samson's owner first  before even getting her own 2 cats out.  In the process of trying to get the door open, the neighbor suffered injuries to her own fingers, getting them stuck in the door, trying so  desperately to get her out.  Only when the neighbor knew  two neighbor men arrived to help get her out did she leave Samson's owner to then  go save her own cats, which she was able to do.  By this time Samson's owner was in neck-high water and was trying to find Samson and yelling for help to get out.  She could see the electricity was still on  because the lights from the cable box were visible through the dark.  She could only hope that Samson had found refuge on   the top shelf in the laundry room where  he would hide in a bad storm.  She knew she couldn't   get there.  Finally two neighbors (more heroes to add to the list), along  with the friend that had tried to help open the door, came to the living room window and broke the window.  Every window in the home had been broken by the force of the flood but they  had to try to get the spikes of glass out so that Samson's owner could exit without getting cut too badly.   Finally she asked for a blanket to protect her from the bottom spiked glass where she then had to go through by jumping up to it where she was then pulled through the flood waters to safety.  Fire Department personnel said they'd do their best to find Samson but she knew the people in the building had to be evacuated first.  In about half an hour a rubber boat arrived to take her to the ambulance and on to the hospital where she    was treated for multiple cuts and scrapes.  Due to the flooding streets it took 90 minutes instead of the usual 15 minutes for   her friends to make it to the hospital to pick her up.  All this  time Samson's owner was sick with worry about her dear Samson.  They weren't able to get into the building on Monday to try to find him because the water level was still too high.  On Tuesday some of her friends were all there early to help with  the digging out process.  About mid afternoon (approximately  36 hours) they found Samson laying on a pile of flood soaked clothes in the closet.  They called for someone to bring a   carrier to put Samson in.   Everyone around was cheering and  so happy for Samson and his owner.  Samson was then taken to the veterinarian for a thorough check-up and was found to be fine.  He remained there over night and was bathed and fed so he'd   be all ready for the reuniting with his owner.  His owner was in shock when being reunited with him--what a highlight to that day!

Samson's owner feels they really are fortunate to have their lives.  Samson is now staying with a friend whose own cats are more accepting of Samson and his owner is just 3 buildings  away at her mother's home where her mother's cat will not tolerate being around another cat.  But Samson will have a   good place to stay until the day comes that he and his owner  will have a home of their own again.  In the meantime with Samson being only 3 building away, his owner is able to spend time with Samson on a daily basis. 

Of course both Samson and his owner lost everything they had.  At this time, after hearing about Samson's plight, several of the Rose Petals kitty owners have been sending donations to us to forward to Samson's owner to help replace all of Samson's kitty necessities.  It is wonderful how kind and generous some of the Rose Petals kitty owners are.   We're a breed of our own!

 

P.S. Last year Rose Petals Delilah, a brown patched tabby, was bit by a brown recluse spider and eventually passed away when the bite turned into cancer.  It would have been devastating to have lost Samson too so soon after losing Delilah.

  TOGETHER AGAIN!

     On 8-24-1995 a blessed event occurred at Rose Petals cattery in the birth of 6 beautiful Maine Coon kittens.  The litter consisted of 3 females and 3 males.  Parents were GC Angtini Calvin John of Swanycoon and CH Rose Petals Kiowa Sioux.
     One of the males (Georgey) went to live in St. Louis, MO; one went to live in Carterville, MO (Oliver); and the other male (Ty) went to live in Joplin, MO with the Rose Petals' logo artist, Julie A. Tichota, Angels Afoot ™ artist.  Two of the females (DD & KK) went to live with a senior citizen in Nevada, MO and the other sister (Rusti) went to live in Jefferson City.  Everyone was happy in their new homes. 
      But sadness struck, first when Ty's  owner, Julie (Angels Afoot artist of the Rose Petals logo), passed away after a long illness.  The decision was made that Ty would go to live with his brother, Ollie, in Carterville, MO.  Just a few months later, the senior citizen in Nevada passed away and DD and KK returned to Rose Petals Cattery to live.  The girls lived back at Rose Petals for almost 3 years.  One day, when the Jefferson City owner of Rusti read about DD and KK losing their home, he made a call to see about the possibility of DD and KK coming to live with their sister, Rusti.  It was decided that they would go and give it a try for a 3-month trial period.  The 3 month trial has now turned into 4 years + and the 3 sisters are still together, oblivious that they had started out life together.

TY ORIGINALLY WAS OWNED BY JULIE A. TICHOTA, ANGELS AFOOT™ ARTIST TO USE IN HER BREEDING PROGRAM.  WHEN JULIE PASSED AWAY AFTER A LONG ILLNESS, TY WENT TO LIVE WITH HIS BROTHER, OLLIE, IN CARTERVILLE.  EVEN THOUGH THEY HADN'T BEEN TOGETHER FOR A FEW YEARS, THEY BECAME THE BEST OF FRIENDS, HAVING NO COMPREHENSION THAT THEY HAD BEEN LITTER MATES AT BIRTH.  AT LAST REPORT, TY HAD GOTTEN UP TO 27 POUNDS AND WAS PUT ON A DIET BY HIS VET.  HE HAS MADE IT BACK DOWN TO 24 POUNDS WITH HOPES OF MAINTAINING THAT WEIGHT.

AFTER DD & KK'S FIRST OWNER PASSED AWAY, THEY CAME BACK TO LIVE AT ROSE PETALS FOR APPROXIMATELY 3 YEARS.  THEY VERY MUCH WANTED THEIR OWN HOME.   THE OWNERS OF THEIR LITTERMATE SISTER, RUSTI ROSE, TOOK A CHANCE AND GAVE DD AND KK A HOME.  MUCH TO OUR EXCITEMENT, THE 3 GIRLS ARE DOING FINE AND DD AND KK HAVE ACCEPTED THEIR NEW LIFE WITH THEIR SISTER AND THEIR NEW DAD AND MOM.
