 "SADIE'S STORY" 2008 "FEATURE KITTY"

FEATURE KITTY

ROSE PETALS MERCEDES TOBEZI
(AKA SADIE)

BORN 9-25-2004

THE FOLLOWING STORY WAS WRITTEN BY SADIE'S HUMAN MOM.
AS SADIE'S BREEDER, I HOPE THIS TRUE LIFE STORY WILL HELP EVERYONE READING IT REALIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF US PROTECTING OUR BELOVED FUR BABIES AND THAT NO MATTER HOW CAREFUL WE ARE, THINGS BEYOND OUR CONTROL OR OUR WILDEST IMAGINATIONS CAN HAPPEN TO OUR FURRY FAMILY MEMBERS.

STORY WRITTEN 8-29-2008

HER STORY IS BELOW:

  SADIE’S STORY

Sadie is a very special cat.  She isn’t just a “cat”.  She has never been just a “cat”.  From the moment she was born she was special.  She was one of the kittens from the last litter of Dezi and Tobacco.  They were also not just “cats”.  And we were lucky to be able to talk Karen out of keeping her, so we could show her, love her, and take care of her in the best possible way.

On July 28, 2008 one of our doors was carelessly left open at night and Sadie went out to explore.  She had never set foot outside before during her life.  The bad thing was, there was a strong thunder storm with lightning later that night, and she must have gotten scared and run for cover…wherever she could find it.  The next morning when I found the door opened and realized Sadie was gone I went frantically looking for her.  I took the day off from work and put up laminated posters all over the subdivision.  I walked and walked calling and looking for her.  I slept in the garage with the door open thinking she would know I was out there and come in.  I made almost daily visits to the humane society checking to see if she was there.  I put her on Craig’s List and in the local paper.  It was just heartbreaking knowing she was out there and I couldn’t find her.  After a few sweltering hot days I was just hoping someone else had found her and was caring for her so she wouldn’t be suffering out in the heat.

I received quite a few phone calls from nice people thinking they had her, but it was never Sadie when I got there to identify her.  I did receive one phone call that almost broke my heart.  A young man called and said he thought he’d found my cat and asked what the amount of the reward was.  When I told him he said, “I think I’ll just keep her!  Ha Ha Ha Ha” then hung up.

I made more posters and put them up over a wider area.  It was so frustrating feeling like she was close by and I was missing her, or that she was so far away I would never find her, or that someone had her.  I had the whole neighborhood looking for her with me, and Karen’s heart was with mine.

On Wednesday, August 27, my neighbor called me at 6am saying she knew this time it was Sadie and she had followed her into the back yard 2 doors down and just caught a glimpse of her tail disappearing into a hole alongside a concrete patio.  I figured she was mistaken because there was no way a big girl like Sadie could fit under a concrete patio in the little hole she was pointing out!  I got my flashlight and went back and looked into the hole which you could only see into if you were flat on your tummy.  The hole widened as it went back toward the house, and then disappeared under a beam supporting the garage.  I called Sadie’s name and heard a faint meow.  It sure sounded like Sadie’s meow.  Then, as I kept calling her, and she kept answering me, she stuck her nose under the beam she was hiding under and I knew it was Sadie,  just from seeing the white on her nose!  I was SO EXCITED!!!  I jumped up and gave my neighbor a big hug and said, “It’s Sadie, it’s Sadie!  It’s really her!”  They went on to work and I kept calling her.  Each time she would answer me, and get a little closer.  After a few more calls she was close enough to the hole that was “too little”, and I could reach her and pull her out.  Her collar and I.D. tag she had been wearing when she disappeared was missing from her neck.  She immediately started purring and “kneading” on my shoulder.  It was the best feeling I have ever had in my life to have my Sadie back in my arms again.

I took her to the vet a few hours later, after I gave her a good loving, a bath, and a good looking over.  She weighed about 18 pounds when she went missing, and was down to 11 pounds when the vet weighed her.  She had lost almost half her body weight.  She looked beautiful, but she felt like skin on bones under her beautiful coat.  Her blood tests came back okay with the exception of some elevated liver enzymes that the vet thought would go back down to normal levels as she ate.  She also had swollen gums and gingivitis from not eating.  She is on antibiotics for that, and they do look better already.

She is eating well and drinking and she has lost that “haunted” look she had in her eyes that first day we got her back.

Sadie is still, more than ever before, not just a “cat”.  She is the most loving companion I have ever had.  Please learn from our carelessness and ALWAYS make sure your doors are closed.  Sadie was very lucky…we were very lucky.  I really don’t think she would have made it much longer with the amount of weight as she had lost.  I just thank God we found her when we did…and we are very grateful to everyone who looked for her, my neighbor who found her, and all those who kept her in their hearts and prayers!    Sadie is getting reacquainted with the other 2 Rose Petals kitties in our home.  Once again, we’re a happy family, happy to be TOGETHER AGAIN!!
