Rusty & Eva’s humans write:
“While Eva has always had a soft full coat, Rusty’s was coarser and his
tail was kind of scruffy. Then, within a matter of a couple of weeks, days
even, his tail blossomed into a magnificent plume reminiscent of pampas
grass. When he walks with his tail erect, the hair flows to the rear and
when he stops it moves forward in slow motion, reminding me of a field of
underwater grass. One of the most beautiful things we enjoy now is the
sight of the two of them walking side by side in front of us with their
tails erect.”
“For a long time both
cats would cough as if they were trying to get up a hairball, but didn’t
know how to do it. Then one night, about
3 a.m.,
Rusty threw up his first hairball. The real interesting thing about this
was that 45 minutes later Eva threw up her first one, too.”
“Rusty is more aggressive during play; Eva is always looking over her
shoulder because if she starts playing with something, the noise attracts
Rusty and he will jump on top of her to get into the game. However, she is
the dominant one when there is food involved. She pretty much takes over
the food dish she wants and will growl – hiss even – if she decides she
doesn’t want to share, although they do eat from the same bowl a lot of the
time. We always feed them with two bowls. One is on the floor and the
other is on top of the dirty clothes hamper (both in the bedroom which
remains their “safe room”). Sometimes, when they are not serious about
eating, but just snacking, Rusty will reach into the bowl with his paw and
scoop out a few pieces on the hamper. Eva will sit on the floor and clean
up everything that falls to the floor.”
“Eva will sometimes
pick up a large mouthful of food, drop it on the floor, and then eat them
one at a time. Eva’s fastidious nature with cleaning up food has another
humorous turn. The bedroom has a hardwood floor with a couple of runners on
each side of the bed. When they get the rips, the rugs will be “rearranged”
and since one of them is next to the food dish on the floor, food will end
up underneath the rug. Whenever I detect this I don’t bother cleaning it
up; I just brush the food out from under the rug and over near the dish. If
Eva hears me do this, she will immediately come over and clean it up, even
if she has just eaten. If she’s not in the room, it will be cleaned up the
next time I go back into the room.”
“Nancy made a toy for
them in the sewing room: a piece of leather on a long piece of wide elastic
tied to the arm of a chair. Nancy said that Eva will pick up the leather
and back away from the chair; chew on the leather for a bit, then let it
go. As it flies back toward the chair, she will chase after it, pounce on
it, and back away again to start the game over. She does this several times
in a row.”
