SADIE’S STORY
Sadie is
a very special cat. She isn’t just a “cat”. She has never been just a
“cat”. From the moment she was born she was special. She was one of
the kittens from the last litter of Dezi and Tobacco. They were also
not just “cats”. And we were lucky to be able to talk Karen out of
keeping her, so we could show her, love her, and take care of her in the
best possible way.
On July
28, 2008 one of our doors was carelessly left open at night and Sadie
went out to explore. She had never set foot outside before during her
life. The bad thing was, there was a strong thunder storm with
lightning later that night, and she must have gotten scared and run for
cover…wherever she could find it. The next morning when I found the
door opened and realized Sadie was gone I went frantically looking for
her. I took the day off from work and put up laminated posters all over
the subdivision. I walked and walked calling and looking for her. I
slept in the garage with the door open thinking she would know I was out
there and come in. I made almost daily visits to the humane society
checking to see if she was there. I put her on Craig’s List and in the
local paper. It was just heartbreaking knowing she was out there and I
couldn’t find her. After a few sweltering hot days I was just hoping
someone else had found her and was caring for her so she wouldn’t be
suffering out in the heat.
I
received quite a few phone calls from nice people thinking they
had her, but it was never Sadie when I got there to identify her. I did
receive one phone call that almost broke my heart. A young man called
and said he thought he’d found my cat and asked what the amount of the
reward was. When I told him he said, “I think I’ll just keep her! Ha
Ha Ha Ha” then hung up.
I made
more posters and put them up over a wider area. It was so frustrating
feeling like she was close by and I was missing her, or that she was so
far away I would never find her, or that someone had her. I had the
whole neighborhood looking for her with me, and Karen’s heart was with
mine.
On
Wednesday, August 27, my neighbor called me at 6am saying she knew this
time it was Sadie and she had followed her into the back yard 2 doors
down and just caught a glimpse of her tail disappearing into a hole
alongside a concrete patio. I figured she was mistaken because there
was no way a big girl like Sadie could fit under a concrete patio in the
little hole she was pointing out! I got my flashlight and went back and
looked into the hole which you could only see into if you were flat on your
tummy. The hole widened as it went back toward the house, and then
disappeared under a beam supporting the garage. I called Sadie’s name
and heard a faint meow. It sure sounded like Sadie’s meow. Then, as I
kept calling her, and she kept answering me, she stuck her nose under
the beam she was hiding under and I knew it was Sadie, just from seeing
the white on her nose! I was SO EXCITED!!! I jumped up and gave my
neighbor a big hug and said, “It’s Sadie, it’s Sadie! It’s really
her!” They went on to work and I kept calling her. Each time she would
answer me, and get a little closer. After a few more calls she was
close enough to the hole that was “too little”, and I could reach her
and pull her out. Her collar and I.D. tag she had been wearing when she
disappeared was missing from her neck. She immediately started purring
and “kneading” on my shoulder. It was the best feeling I have ever had
in my life to have my Sadie back in my arms again.
I took
her to the vet a few hours later, after I gave her a good loving, a
bath, and a good looking over. She weighed about 18 pounds when she
went missing, and was down to 11 pounds when the vet weighed her. She
had lost almost half her body weight. She looked beautiful, but she
felt like skin on bones under her beautiful coat. Her blood tests came
back okay with the exception of some elevated liver enzymes that the vet
thought would go back down to normal levels as she ate. She also had
swollen gums and gingivitis from not eating. She is on antibiotics for
that, and they do look better already.
She is
eating well and drinking and she has lost that “haunted” look she had in
her eyes that first day we got her back.
Sadie is
still, more than ever before, not just a “cat”. She is the most loving
companion I have ever had. Please learn from our carelessness and
ALWAYS make sure your doors are closed. Sadie was very lucky…we were
very lucky. I really don’t think she would have made it much longer
with the amount of weight as she had lost. I just thank God we found
her when we did…and we are very grateful to everyone who looked for her,
my neighbor who found her, and all those who kept her in their hearts
and prayers! Sadie is getting reacquainted with the other 2 Rose
Petals kitties in our home. Once again, we’re a happy family, happy to
be TOGETHER AGAIN!!

My name is Karen Rose.
I've been showing and breeding Maine Coons since 1993. My husband,
Larry, assists in bathing, nail trimming and he is my expert shot giver
when it's vaccination time. I have a married son (AGE 42) and my
husband has a married daughter (30) who has a son, Jaden, born in
October 2003.
We are both retired
now so that gives us a lot more time to spend with the cats and kittens,
both in quality and quantity. We love having the patter of little
paws around. When all the kittens have "left the nest" it gets
pretty lonely around here. We always look forward to new litters
when the time is right.
I hope you take the
time to view the rest of the Rose Petals web site. You can see our
beautiful kitties, both show cats and breeders, as well as pets that
have been adopted from Rose Petals in past years. Some of the pets
turned out to be show quality, but the new family preferred to keep
kitty at home.
Rose Petals Maine Coon Cats cattery raises all kittens underfoot, in the
house (for better socialization), never setting foot in the cattery .
The mother and her kittens stay in the birthing room for the first four
weeks, getting acquainted with the adult humans of the household.
After reaching four weeks of age, they receive their first FVRCP+C
vaccination. After a few days have passed, the kittens are
introduced to the "kitten room" which is a large living room with cat
trees and toys for their playing and climbing enjoyment. Once the
kittens are used to their new kitten room, when supervision is available
the first couple of days, the kittens are allowed to come outside the
kitten room and meet the other feline members of the family. After
we see how the kittens handle this type setting and all the kittens are
used to the other cats, then they are allowed to roam and explore the
entire household. All the adult cats in the household have been
through this many times and are always receptive to the kittens and
eager to play with them and even help the mother in grooming them.
We have found this has produced very socialized kittens and are quick to
adapt to their new home setting when the time comes.
By the time the kittens are ready to go to their new homes (12 weeks of
age), they have been wormed 2-3 times, have received three FVRCP+C
vaccinations and both the Initial and Booster Feline Leukemia
vaccination. The kittens make a visit to the veterinarian for a
health check after they have their first FVRCP+C vaccination and it is
safe for them to be exposed to a clinic setting. At the visit they
receive a thorough health check. At 11 weeks of age, before going
to their new homes at 12 weeks, they are given the same thorough exam
again at which time they are also spayed/neutered. If all these
things are met with a "normal" reading, then the kittens have been given
a clean bill of health and are ready to go to their new homes. It
is part of the Kitten Adoption Contract that the kitten be taken to the
new owner's veterinarian within 48 to 72 hours after arriving at its new
home so that the new vet can reiterate that the kitten is in good
health, thus activating the Health Guarantee. Rose Petals gives a
one year health guarantee against genetic defects.
Rose Petals cattery does not inbreed nor do we line breed.
If the cats are related to another cat in the cattery, they are not
allowed to breed with that cat. The males and females are kept
apart until time for the breeding process.
Rose Petals has been a
registered cattery with CFA since 1993, receiving the "Certified Cattery
of Excellence" license each year after that. Rose Petals is also
an ACFA certified "Cattery of Distinction" effective since July 31,
2001. Rose Petals is also registered with the TICA cat registry.
Our goal is to do all we can to insure the Maine Coon Cat is improved
and not be allowed to go into extinction. We take pride in doing
all we can to breed for good health and a loving, affectionate
temperament. After all, the Maine Coon is the only natural
longhair purebred cat in America - America's own and the official state
cat of the State of Maine. We want this breed to continue!!

In a
freak accident on Sunday, May 22, 2005 at 10:30 P.M. Scotty was fatally
injured when he jumped from his cat tree in our bedroom (where he lived
away from the females of the household), the cat tree moved backwards
when he jumped from it, the cat tree hitting the wall bringing it to an
abrupt stop, causing him to fall short of his landing spot on the
mattress of the bed and instead struck the wooden bed frame and corner
post of the bed with the force only a 20 pound cat catapulting from his
perch could have. The light had been turned out just seconds
before and the room was totally dark. He had done this once
before, but it was during the daylight hours where he could see where he
was heading and he was able to correct his landing. Since Scotty's
death, we have made a change in that we now have a night light in the
room and no longer have a totally dark bedroom. It was a nightly
ritual for Scotty to join us in bed where he'd cuddle, hug, kiss and
purr us and himself to sleep. He was super affectionate and we
knew from the time he was a little kitten that he was definitely a
keeper. We had even planned to take him with us when we started
traveling in our camper trailer. Now we can only keep him in our
hearts where the memory of his love and devotion will never die.
Scotty will always be our very special gift from God. We regret
our time together was much too short. We love and miss you so
much, Scotty.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF
SCOTTY
9-4-2003 -
5-22-2005
You were only four weeks old
When you tugged at the strings of my heart;
I knew then you were that special one,
The one with which I didn’t want to part.
I fantasized you by my side
For many years to come;
I just had no idea at all
So young, God would call you home.
The accident that took your life
Still haunts me all the time.
I long to go back to the days
When on earth you still were mine.
I miss the nights you cuddled close
Within my arms so tight;
And purred and purred content to be
Close to me throughout the night.
While in my arms I held your paw
In my hand as I caressed its pad;
So smooth and soft, you loved it too,
But now I just feel sad.
Sad that I can’t touch you
Sad no more I’ll feel
Your cold wet nose upon me
As from me a kiss you’d steal.
Just five days after you left this
earth
Your babies’ lives began
Entering this world in the very room
Where your life had its abrupt end.
I know I’ll keep you close to me
Your memory will live in my heart;
And some day on the other side
We’ll never have to part.
Although my heart is breaking
And I love and miss you so;
I hope to someday understand
Just why you had to go.
Your human mom,
Karen
